Air travel to Los Angeles: From the Bay Area, ry Southwest Airlines: www.southwest.com. With a 14-day advance purchase you may get $39 fare each way. Again, there are a limited number of seats at each fare.
Car: Driving in Mexico is its own adventure. The roads are decent though narrow and one lane each way with not much shoulder. The scenery is varied and interesting. There are cows and other animals which wander over the lands. To drive in Baja, you need Mexican auto insurance. Most American insurance companies do not insure you in Mexico. Also, regarding accidents and liability, the Mexicans operate under a different kind of judicial system than the U.S. It is a Napoleonic code, which means you are guilty till you prove yourself innocent. You can purchase insurance through Discover Baja Travel Club 800.727.BAJA (2252) www.discoverbaja.com or at the border. One consideration: do NOT drive at night. This is the time that trucks drive the interstates and the roads become more dangerous. Also, cows or other animals can wander over the roads at any time; at night, it becomes difficult to stop in time.
Bus: Express buses come highly recommended by previous years' participants. The buses are fast, comfortable and usually have clean bathrooms. Last year, bus fare cost approximately $100 round-trip with daily departures from Tijuana at 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. The bus arrives in Loreto approximately 16 hours later. For updated schedules and fares, call Autobus ABC @ 011-52-664-626-1147
Mexican Tourist Visa: During your stay in Baja you must have a Mexican Tourist Visa with you at all times. You will be asked to relinquish it at the airport when you leave the country. The airline provides tourist visa applications for you while in flight to Baja. Do not lose the tourist visa while in Mexico; you may be fined up to $50. For issuance of a tourist visa, you must have current identification ... either a current driver's license and birth certificate, or a current passport. You will be issued the tourist visa at Customs when you arrive in Mexico. We recommend that you make sure the customs agents stamp your passport to show you entered the country legally.
Passport:
Beginning in 2007, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has stipulated that travelers must have a valid passport to re-enter the United States from Mexico.
